About 4,000 medical students are taking classes on everything from measuring quality to using technology to prevent medical errors, but the training is not happening in medical schools.

Granted there are numerous options to consider in paying for a higher education. Of those many people choose 1:3 of the most popular options, either grants, work-study program or scholarships.

Scholarships have a particular appeal because there is no money to pay back to the organizations, companies, clubs, religious entities or individuals who generously donate their monies---i.e. it's "free". While grants and loans are free also, they are usually given based on financial need and issues by the government or schools.

One of the leaders in this field have devised 5 tips when applying for scholarships below:

1. When writing an essay, always remember who your audience is. For instance, consider who is reading your essay, and direct your verbiage to that particular organization or institution.
2. Apply for scholarships as early as possible.
3. Ensure that you are meeting all criteria the essay requires of you. Be open, honest, and be sure to follow instructions precisely.
4. When mailing in a scholarship application, be sure to send it certified and request a receipt to ensure whoever is offering the scholarship receives it.
5. Double-check your spelling and grammar

Tax-free weekend for Back-to-School supplies

One of the first signs that the new school year is right around the corner is North Carolina’s seventh annual Tax-Free Weekend. Sales tax will be omitted from many items at retailers across the state August 1 through 3.

Gas prices and the economy woes might work to parents’ advantage this year. In addition to omitting the 6.75 percent state sales tax on school supplies, clothing, computers and other products, many stores will be offering further discounts on these types of items.

At the seventh-annual Back 2 School Blast community carnival parents can pick up free book bags filled with essential school supplies for their school-age kids. Families attending the Blast on August 8 can also enjoy carnival games, an inflatable slide and a free meal. The Blast is open to any family with a need, and everything is provided free of charge.
